In his early teens he moved with his parents to Australia. His family moved to Maryborough then to Gayndah where they bought a farm at Reid’s Creek. Enlisted at Brisbane on the 27/07/1916 age 18 years His next of kin (NOK), Mother, Mrs Miriam Ann Cooper of Reids Creek Gayndah.
On enlistment he was 5ft 6, weighed 135 lbs and stated his occupation as a Farmer. On the 02/12/1916 his mother wrote a letter to the Camp Commandant Enoggera informing him that the recruit Sergeant told them when her son enlisted that he was to put that he was 18 years of age and that he would be kept in Australia for home service. She then stated he was only 16 years of age.
He was charged with making a false declaration and was remanded for the production of birth certificate. On the 05/09/1917 he arrived in France. On the 11/10/1917 he was wounded with gunshot wounds to legs.
