War memorials around Australia, and indeed the world, including Gayndah, have large lists of names of people who have served their country in time of war. Most of them have returned to their home country, some bearing physical and emotional scars from their experiences. Sadly, a significant number of them did not return, having paid the supreme sacrifice on foreign soil.
Even more sadly, as time goes by, many of these names are just that, names on a monument, without any background information to tell the story of their service and their stories are in danger of being lost.
I often see people looking at the monument in Gayndah. Many of these are travellers to our town, though some are locals spending a few reflective moments, reading the names and in their own way paying respect to the people whose names they are seeing.
Gayndah is fortunate to have someone who has a passion for military history and researching the stories behind the people who have served, and whose names appear on the monuments. Through the work of Keith Wrench, the man who had the vision to create the QR Code which is now being accessed, the names on the Gayndah monuments are being given a new life and interested viewers will be able to gain some further information about those names they are reading.
"This is an innovative project and is worthy of some recognition. Credit is also due to the professional service provided by Amanda Wenck and the team at Truth Designs, who have again gone the extra mile for the Gayndah RSL Sub-Branch. Another feature of this project is that it is in fact a “living project” which, in contrast to a printed book, is able to be added to as futher information becomes available. For this reason, visitors to this website will have opportunity to contribute information that will be able to be added along the way.
I salute the work of Keith Wrench for his dogged determination to bring this project to fruition, and commend it to all who venture to use this great resource."Boyd Baker
