Enlisted at Maryborough on the 30/05/1916 age 23 years. His address, Byrnestown, Gayndah His next of kin (NOK), Brother Mr Albert Sanderson of Byrnestown. On enlistment he was 5ft 9, weighed 146 lbs and stated his occupation as a Teamster.
Sanderson’s Coy was in the line near Messines and were waiting to be relieved. Sanderson was the last to leave the position, remaining at his gun until the last minute. As he was walking up the trenches to leave an artillery shell exploded close by.
Before leaving for overseas, the WYR Tennis Club in Byrnestown held an afternoon tea as a send-off, a large number of people turned up to this event. He was sent a wrist watch from members of the Byrnestown Volunteers Appreciation Society.
